The story of the Cumberland Valley Railroad was well told by Paul Westhafer in his History of the Cumberland Valley Railroad 1835-1919, But his book ended in 1919 and there is another century’s worth of story to tell now. Westhafer also, of necessity, focused on the later themes and stories woven through the road’s history. This narrative will present details on a number of themes and glimpses of many facets of the railroad’s impact on the area that were beyond the scope of Westhafer’s work, focusing on the portion of the line in Cumberland County.
