Reflections on 10 plus years at CCHS

Hi, my name is Lucy Wolf. I am the Finance Secretary for the Cumberland County Historical Society. Many of you know me from the Reception Desk where I started out in 2005 as Receptionist and held that position for 10 years.

I came to CCHS with the intent to volunteer the summer after I had returned to college at age 40, to study history. I was warmly welcomed and found myself liking all the people I started to work with. For most of my life I have loved history and was quite excited to finally be in an environment that dealt with all these historical aspects.

The volunteering eventually turned into a job, a couple weekends a month. To make a long story short, I was a few semesters of college in and found I had to find a job with more hours and quit college. At that time CCHS was not offering any more hours. Well, a few months went by and I did not like the work I had taken. I got a phone call from Linda Witmer asking if I would like the reception job four days a week. I said yes! That was one of the best days of life.

The experience I have had in the past 10 1/2 years here has been wonderful. Besides learning my receptionist duties, all my co-workers became dear friends, my second family. We have all be through many life changes with each other. Plus, I have met folks from all over the United States and the World. I can not imagine not becoming so knowledgeable without all the people I have met through the years, co-workers, and patrons.

This past year has been a whirlwind of education for me. Learning the new position I’ve taken has been a challenge, which is one reason I applied for it. But I want to say thank you to all for kindness, encouragement, and the privilege of being with so many educated and bright minds.
