Description

The Agricultural Reform Movement & Barn Building in Cumberland County by Jerry Clouse

The Historic Barn & Farm Foundation of Pennsylvania 2023 Annual Meeting & Barn Tour Guide for June 9 & 10, 2023. Numerous barns throughout the county were field viewed prior to selection nine for the 2023 tour. It was found that many of the barns surveyed during the late 1980s as part of the Cumberland County architectural survey have been lost to development or otherwise dismantled or demolished. Sown townships in eastern Cumberland are now nearly devoid of historic barns, and we will visit the last working farm in Hampden Township. The nine originally identified were confirmed through a field view help August 18, 2022, by the tour committee. Selection was based upon integrity of original design and materials and permission from the owner for access. In addition, barns were chosen as representative examples within their specific landscape or representative of a specific element of the Agricultural Reform Movement within Cumberland County. This book includes Historic Background, The Agricultural Reform Movement, information about the barn builders and detailed descriptions and information about the nine barns chosen.
