Dear Folks at Home: The Civil War Letters of Leo W. and John I. Faller with an Account of Andersonville
Price: $16.95
Description
Some years ago, the late Allan D. Thompson, while attending a public sale, found over thirty letters of Leo W. Faller and his brother John I. Faller of Carlisle, Pennsylvania which were written to their family during the Civil War. In this book, the letters are presented in their entirety.
Leo and John enlisted in 1861 into Company A of the 36th Regiment, Seventh Pennsylvania Reserve at the ages of eighteen and twenty. The young men faithfully wrote home describing their daily camp life, picket duty, dress parades, and the battles in which they fought. Leo was killed at the Battle of Antietam in 1862 and John was taken prisoner at the Battle of the Wilderness in May 1864 and was sent to Andersonville. He returned home in April 1865.
Little editing has been done to the letters besides the addition of some punctuation to break up long, rambling sentences. Inaccuracies in spelling are entirely the brothers’ own. Allen D. Thompson added many footnotes to the letters for clarification and identification of fellow soldiers and local items.
Spiral bound, paperback, 189 pages.
