MUSEUM SCAVENGER HUNT
Enhance your family’s museum tour experience through our new “Scavenger Hunt Tour” brochure created just for children and families.  Spark their curiosity in history and all of that “old stuff” from this creative approach to seeing the museum through their eyes and interests.  Solving word clues and locating visual objects will keep children focused on their “scavenger” quest.  These free brochures are located at the main entrance desk.

Speaker: David Cordier, owner of Cordier Antiques & Fine Art
Mr. Cordier will present a history of the development of stoneware with a review of the manufacturing process. Glazes, forms and types of decorations will be considered along with what factors contribute to the rarity of a piece decorated stoneware. Free to the public

ADVENTURES IN HISTORY SUMMER CAMP
NATIVE AMERICANS OF THE EASTERN WOODLANDS
(Elementary level – students entering 4th and 5th grades in the fall of 2008)
 The Cumberland County Historical Society's annual one-week summer camps will feature the culture and events surrounding Native Americans of the Eastern Woodlands.  Through hands-on interaction with historic crafts, games, food, music, and clothing we will explore the life ways of Central Pennsylvania’s earliest inhabitants.  Campers will have the opportunity to wear deer hide clothing, participate in archery, do face and body painting, learn hunting techniques, make and play native games, create Woodland handicrafts, cook using corn recipes, and make fire with a bow drill.

Cost:  $85 for members; $100 for nonmembers (Discount of $10 per family for multiple family members attending any camp) ENROLLMENT IS LIMITED TO 30 CAMPERS PER CAMP. Camps fill quickly - VISA and MASTERCARD accepted over the phone.

ADVANCED ADVENTURES IN HISTORY CAMP
WORLD WAR II AND THE 1940s IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY
(Upper level – students entering 6th, 7th , 8th or 9th grades in the fall of 2008)

 Have you ever wondered what life was like during World War II? Using historic crafts, games, food, music, dance, and clothing we will explore civilian and military aspects of the war. Beginning with the attack on Pearl Harbor, campers will go through “boot camp” with military personnel. Each camper will dress in period military and civilian clothing, paint on nylon stockings, learn how weapons of the period worked, work in a war factory, and experience the challenges of rationing and civil defense. From bombing runs and military dodge ball to scrap drives and baking cakes without sugar, this camp has something for everyone.

Join us for a festive evening featuring food from local restaurants and caterers, Celtic performers offering live entertainment, bagpipes and kilts, libations and hospitality.  Reservations required.  $45 per person

MCLAIN CELTIC FESTIVAL
Join us for the 14th Annual McLain Celtic Festival.  There will be lots of musical entertainment, including Irish and Scottish dancers, bagpipes, Border collie demonstrations and highland athletics.  Other highlights include re-enactors, Scottish Clan representatives, highland cattle, vendors with Celtic goods and of course, delicious food!
Tickets:  $8; children under 12 free; Advance tickets $7

Lois Lowry, author and winner of two Newbery Medal Awards, will give a presentation and do a book signing.  Ms. Lowry lived in Carlisle during her childhood and will talk about how her experiences here inspired her writing.  Lois Lowry is a favorite author of children and middle school students and adults.
