The Agricultural Reform Movement and Barn Building in Cumberland County
May 9 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Reform advocates of the 19th-century sought better farming methods, including crop rotation and various fertilizers to rejuvenate the soil. Their goal was for the farm to operate more efficiently with well-ordered agricultural complexes. Barns were to be designed for the ease of labor by the farmer, and specialized outbuildings were to be placed for the convenience of the farm’s workforce. The featured barns exemplify the master framing skills of the county’s barn builders as they strove to better meet the changing needs of 19th and early 20th-century farmers.
