Sidewalks Through the Centuries

Sidewalks Through the Centuries invites you to pause and look through the layers of time. In this exhibit, we have paired historic photographs from the collections of the Cumberland County Historical Society with modern views taken from the same perspectives. By standing where the photographers of the past once stood, you can witness the evolution of our community—from dirt roads and horse-drawn carriages to the bustling borough we call home today.

Primers, Penmanship & Pot-belly Stoves

Between the ridges of the Blue Mountains and the crystalline waters of the Yellow Breeches Creek, one-room schoolhouses of yesteryear dot the landscape of Cumberland County. By the latter half of the nineteenth century, there were more than 160 one-room (and sometimes two-room) schools operating throughout the region. While some of these schools have since been torn down or ravaged by natural disaster, many still stand as iconic images of the Common School Movement that educated generations of children living in rural America.
