Remembering Agnes: A Panel Discussion on the Local and Regional Flooding of June of 1972

Presentations by:

Noel Potter, Professor Emeritus of Geology, Dickinson College: Noel visited local bridges in Carlisle and on the West Shore and flew over the area for photos during Agnes.  He will discuss and illustrate the flooding in Cumberland County using images that he donated to the Cumberland County Historical Society Photo Collection.

Shawn Gladden, Executive Director Cumberland County Historical Society: Mr. Gladden is the former ED of the Howard County Historical Society in Ellicott City, MD and was witness to the deadly flash flooding in EC in 2016 and 2018.  He has done extensive research on the Flooding History of Ellicott City and the Patapsco River Valley.  Agnes was the 2nd worst Flood event in Ellicott City’s history.  Mr. Gladden will present images and video along with some historic background on the flooding problems in the Patapsco River Valley. 

Randy Watts, Historian: Randy Watts became a volunteer firefighter in 1970.  He was a member of the Cumberland Fire Company of Carlisle during the Agnes Flood and responded to numerous calls throughout the event.  He later served as the Fire Service Coordinator for Cumberland County’s Emergency Management Department.  He has thoroughly documented the history of Cumberland County’s fire companies, including their actions during the Agnes Flood.

Bob Clemm, Retired Fire Chief:  Robert Clemm joined the Camp Hill Fire Company #1 at the July 1959 Company Business Meeting and is still serving as an Active Member in the same Company.  During that time he has served as an Assistant Fire Chief for 20 years, Safety Officer for 7 years and Fire Police Lieutenant  for 12 years.  He is currently serving as Fire Police Lieutenant. During Hurricane Agnes he was the Highest ranking Fire Company Officer (1st Asst. Fire Chief) serving as its IC for the duration. He was also the person of contact from Cumberland County Communications about establishing a West Shore EOC at Camp Hill’s Fire Station.
