Reed Architectural Lecture – Down by the Station: Architecture of the Cumberland Valley Railroad

October 12, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

James Fouchard

DOWN BY THE STATION: Architecture of the Cumberland Valley Railroad by James Fouchard, President of the National Railway Historical Society, Cumberland Valley Chapter

Refreshments will be served starting at 6:30PM.

JAMES FOUCHARD’s lifelong interests in art, drama, history and architecture led him to pursue a career in theatrical scenic design, graduating from Ohio University summa cum laude with a BFA degree in Theater-Production Design. Over the past 45 years he has created designs for over 300 productions in regional, national touring, opera and educational theater. His interest in railroads started very early in his childhood, and a handful of brief summer visits with the station agent, manning the old Illinois Central depot in his grandmother’s small town, cemented his interest in railroad stations. Remarkably, his work as scenic designer at Pennsylvania’s famed Totem Pole Playhouse led to purchasing the Cumberland Valley Railroad station once in Quincy, Pennsylvania, which he owned forever 20 years and is now on display at Norlo Park in Guilford Township, PA. Mr. Fouchard’s work on its restoration led to his continued research of the CVRR and the architectural history of its stations and other railroad structures, and has authored several published articles. He currently serves as President of the Cumberland Valley Chapter, National Railway Historical Society.
