A discussion with Scott Shane, author of Flee North: A forgotten Hero and the Fight for Freedom in Slavery’s Borderland. Learn about the formerly enslaved man who coined the term “Underground Railroad.” Shane’s book unearths the story of Thomas Smallwood, born into slavery in Maryland, purchased his freedom, and began working to free enslaved people. The book was named one of the best ten books of 2023 by Publishers Weekly.
