An evening with Pulitzer Prize nominee, Prof. Jacqueline Jones

February 21, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

As part of our partnership with Greater Carlisle’s Heart & Soul Project, we’ve been awarded a $12,000 grant from Federation of State Humanities and Pennsylvania Humanities to conduct a series of programs on Journalism and Resident Engaged Community Development.  As part of this grant we have invited Prof. Jacqueline Jones (University of Texas) to speak about her research and Pulitzer Prize nominated book “A Dreadful Deceit: The Myth of Race from the Colonial Era to Obama’s America.”

The word “race” is a normal part of our everyday vocabulary, but the idea of “race” has a history, and we should revisit that history to learn how the concept of “racial differences” has been used by different groups over the generations to advance their interests. Since the biology of “race” is a fiction, why do we continue to use the word and all its many variations – “race relations, ” “biracial” – today?
This event is being held at the Stern Center Great Room, Dickinson College.
