Foreword
The transcription of Captain Hamilton’s Company Orderly Book is divided into two parts. The first part includes daily entries made, with a few exceptions, sequentially between 28 June and 24 December 1759. The second part contains several miscellaneous records entered towards the back of the book. These may have been reports—or drafts thereof—to higher headquarters accounting for personnel and equipment. Also included is a personal entry, in which Sergeant Ramsey records his enlistment in the company.
The text of the Orderly Book is transcribed as written with spelling, punctuation and capitalization as intact as can be deciphered. Uncertainties about words or phrases are indicated by brackets. […] indicates words missing or undecipherable. Words lined out in the text are so indicated by a bracket and strikethrough symbol.
The names of nearly 100 military personnel and other individuals appear in the Orderly Book entries, The Appendix contains a listing of those men who likely were officers of the Pennsylvania Regiment, with the best estimate of their full names and date of commissioning where known.
The journal containing the records of Captain Hamilton’s company also was used for several other purposes. In the years following 1759, it became a ledger of accounts payable to Samuel Ramsay, a repository for poetry, and apparently a place for penmanship practice. Subsequent entries, bearing on topics other than the French and Indian War, are not included in this transcription.

Catalog Description:

.22 – Orderly Book of Captain Thomas Hamilton’s Company, 3rd Battalion, Pennsylvania Regiment during the period from June 28, 1759 to December 24, 1759. Entries describe orders and assignments for members of the Pennsylvania Regiment during their deployment from Carlisle to Fort Bedford with stops at Falling Springs, Fort Loudon, Fort Littleton, and Juniata Crossings. Book was kept by Sgt. Samuel Ramsay who subsequently used it for recording personal financial accounts during the period 1760-1789. Entries by subsequent as yet unidentified owners of the book include poetry and apparently penmanship practice.

Orderly book entries include references to members of the Pennsylvania Regiment, Lower Counties [Delaware] troops, Maryland forces, and the British military leadership who led the expedition of 1759. A list of these men, with variations used for spelling of names, and possible identifications follows below. See the transcription with index for specific citations.
