HISTORICAL NOTES

Milton Embick Flower was born on 27 February 1910 in Dauphin, Pennsylvania to Mary Lenore Embick and Clarence Guiles Flower. He is considered to have been one of the best historians of Cumberland County and Carlisle in his time, writing several works that attempted to chronicle the history of the area. The Flower family at large was one deeply invested in the local history of Carlisle as well as their own lineage, as such it is no surprise that Milton Flower Embick found himself so invested in the history of the area. Beyond his writings, he was also a prolific member of Cumberland County Historical Society (then known as the Hamilton Library Association) starting in the 1930s, eventually finding himself elected as director in 1944. He’d later serve as president of the society from 1961 to 1968. During that time, Flower would oversee expansions to the Society’s main building as well as assist in the planning of the Society’s usage of the Two Mile House. He would pass away on 2 January 1996.

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The Milton Embick Flower Papers Collections features various papers, correspondence and publications that relate to Milton Embick Flower, his family, as well as his associates. It is contained in 11 document boxes and 10 oversized boxes, with the contents totaling 295 folders with several additional contents that sit loose in the boxes without a folder. Some of the boxes belong to subgroups within the collection that typically relate to a specific person, apart from the final box which exclusively contains Christmas and greeting cards. If a box is not labeled on this finding aide, it can be assumed that the contents are too motley to be categorized or relate predominantly to Milton Embick Flower himself but defy categorization. Additionally, there are several original, handwritten correspondence within the collection, many of which come with a transcript for ease of reading. Not every handwritten item has a transcript and as such each handwritten item that is accompanied by a transcript is labelled as such.
