2020 Summer Camps

2020 Summer Camps

Of all the many enjoyable parts of my job, Adventures in History Summer Camp, is perhaps my favorite. It is a time when school is over and children get to explore many different aspects of historical eras without the focus being on dates and tests. Instead, we try to give campers the opportunity to experience the real skills that people used every day. Whether it is making friction fire by rubbing sticks together or sewing a pincushion, campers delve into aspects of history that don’t make most textbooks. Our three-year rotation ensures that no camper will attend the same camp. And for me, it is a true joy to watch kids go through all six camps and see how they mature physically, but also intellectually.

ADVANCED ADVENTURES IN HISTORY CAMP: WORLD WAR II AND THE 1940s IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY

Have you ever wondered what life was like during World War II? Using historic crafts, games, food, music, dance, and clothing we will explore civilian and military aspects of the war. Beginning with the attack on Pearl Harbor, campers will go through “boot camp” with military personnel. Each camper will dress in period military and civilian clothing, paint on nylon stockings, learn how weapons of the period worked, work in a war factory, and experience the difficulties of rationing and civil defense. From bombing runs and military dodge ball to baking cakes without sugar and scrap drives, this camp has something for everyone.
