The New Way: Greeks Come to Carlisle, Pennsylvania

The Cumberland County Historical Society announces the Society’s publication
of a new book, The New Way: Greeks Come to Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
The late Christina Alexis McCormick, who grew-up in Carlisle, moved
away, and then returned for the years of her “retirement,” made a bequest
for the Historical Society to document and make public the story of the
Greek immigrants who settled in Carlisle. This project was undertaken
by Susan E. Meehan, who spent twelve months interviewing, researching,
writing the book, and creating a “Greek Collection” for the Hamilton Library.
A Pennsylvania native, Meehan has resided in Carlisle and Cumberland County
for twenty years. She holds a graduate degree in American Studies
from Penn State and has recently been involved with several editing
and research projects involving local area history.
Copies of The New Way are available for purchase.
The price is $22.95 plus tax. The book contains many photographs
of early twentieth-century Carlisle and the town’s Greek-born families
and their businesses. It tells the story of why these individuals
emigrated from Greece and what made Carlisle an attractive destination.
It also provides brief sketches of the families and the businesses they
established. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sale of
the book will benefit the historical society.
For information about this free program, call 249-7610.

COOKBOOK WINS NATIONAL COMPETITION
The Cumberland County Historical Society is pleased to
announce that its recent publication PAST RECEIPTS, PRESENT RECIPES, was
selected as the Third Place National Winner for the 1997 Tabasco Community
Cookbook Awards competition.
The judges commented "that PAST RECEIPTS, PRESENT RECIPES
is a fascinating 300-page book which combines the nostalgia of Miss Peachy
Parker's 1910 book of receipts and the society's archival photos and wonderful
recipes contributed by current members." This thoughtfully produced book
demonstrates a great respect for history, relating the vintage photos to
specific food sections. From coffee table to kitchen counter, the cookbook
explores the past with over one hundred photos which provide a record of
regional culinary culture.
The book is part of the Society's Heritage Series. This
series is a collection of popular limited-edition books on local history.
The cookbook was an intensive volunteer project chaired by Mary Pat Wentzel
and editors, Andrea Sheya and Ann Kramer Hoffer and their committee, Susan
D'Lamater, Sondra Elias, Gretchen Hoffman, Virginia LaFond, Jackie Martin,
Patti Owen, Anne Pass, Maureen Reed, Jean Sorem, Pat Strickler, Eileen
