PUBLICATIONS

   The publications program, a hallmark of activity, provides a forum for research on county history. The Society publishes four newsletters, two semi-annual journals, exhibit brochures, monographs and the popular Heritage Series which are hard cover, richly illustrated books on local history. 
 

   The Newsletter of the Cumberland County Historical Society is published quarterly for the members and friends of the CCHS. It contains news about upcoming events at the Society and the Two Mile House as well as reports from staff and volunteers. 

   The Historical Society will print genealogical queries in the quarterly membership newsletter. Entries are limited to two per sender per issue and are $3.00 per query for members and $7.00 for non-members. Payment must be included with the query. Include your name and address. Limit is 40 words. Items that do not follow these instructions will not be printed. Queries will be printed as space permits.

The Cumberland County Historical Society announces the publication of a series showing connected drafts of early land transactions with Cumberland county and the Penn family This includes "warrents," "surveys," "Blunston Licenses," and "patents." Each booklet includes a 22 x 30 inch map showing the 18th century land holdings in relation to currently recognizable and identifiable places. 
The first issue is for the Shippensburg Quadrangle, including lands in both Cumberland and Franklin Counties. The second issue is the Newburg Quadrangle, which includes land in Cumberland, Perry, and Franklin Counties. The third is for the Newville Quadrangle and the fourth, the Walnut Bottom Quadrangle, both for land only in Cumberland County. The fifth is Plainfield, with lands in Cumberland County. The sixth is Andersonburg (Doubling Gap) & Landisburg (McClure's Gap) showing lands in Cumberland County only. The seventh issue is the Dickinson Quadrangle with lands in Cumberland and Adams County.
The effort has been supported by a grant from the George B. Stuart Charitable Foundation. Hayes R. Eshenmann of Shippensburg began work more than 15 years ago and following his death, Paul Barner has continues his effort. The actual documents that support the research are on file at CCHS and are available for review by researchers.

The New Way: Greeks Come to Carlisle, Pennsylvania

The Cumberland County Historical Society announces the Society’s publication of a new book, The New Way: Greeks Come to Carlisle, Pennsylvania. 
The late Christina Alexis McCormick, who grew-up in Carlisle, moved away, and then returned for the years of her “retirement,” made a bequest for the Historical Society to document and make public the story of the Greek immigrants who settled in Carlisle.  This project was undertaken by Susan E. Meehan, who spent twelve months interviewing, researching, writing the book, and creating a “Greek Collection” for the Hamilton Library.  A Pennsylvania native, Meehan has resided in Carlisle and Cumberland County for twenty years.  She holds a graduate degree in American Studies from Penn State and has recently  been involved with several editing and research projects involving local area history. 
Copies of The New Way  are available for purchase. The price is $22.95 plus tax. The book contains many photographs of early twentieth-century Carlisle and the town’s Greek-born families and their businesses.  It tells the story of why these individuals emigrated from Greece and what made Carlisle an attractive destination.  It also provides brief sketches of the families and the businesses they established.  One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sale of the book will benefit the historical society.

COOKBOOK WINS NATIONAL COMPETITION

   The Cumberland County Historical Society is pleased to announce that its recent publication PAST RECEIPTS, PRESENT RECIPES, was selected as the Third Place National Winner for the 1997 Tabasco Community Cookbook Awards competition. 

   The judges commented "that PAST RECEIPTS, PRESENT RECIPES is a fascinating 300-page book which combines the nostalgia of Miss Peachy Parker's 1910 book of receipts and the society's archival photos and wonderful recipes contributed by current members." This thoughtfully produced book demonstrates a great respect for history, relating the vintage photos to specific food sections. From coffee table to kitchen counter, the cookbook explores the past with over one hundred photos which provide a record of regional culinary culture. 

   The book is part of the Society's Heritage Series. This series is a collection of popular limited-edition books on local history. The cookbook was an intensive volunteer project chaired by Mary Pat Wentzel and editors, Andrea Sheya and Ann Kramer Hoffer and their committee, Susan D'Lamater, Sondra Elias, Gretchen Hoffman, Virginia LaFond, Jackie Martin, Patti Owen, Anne Pass, Maureen Reed, Jean Sorem, Pat Strickler, Eileen Swidler and Virginia Wentzel.
